The SLD competency deals with understanding and applying of theories that support and inform the development of a well-rounded student. These include theories that address students’ psycho-social, social identity, and cognitive/moral development and those that address the impact of college on students and as well as typology theories that describe the different ways that students view the world. Utilizing the SLD competency involves using the knowledge and application of these theories in designing and assessing learning/developmental outcomes, interventions, advising, programming and other services offered to students.

The Self-Authorship theory by Baxter Magolda is an all-time favorite for me because it encapsulates the overall goal that every student would leave college with the skills, experiences, and level of development that enables them to become authors of their own lives. Theories enable me to see where students are, so I can find ways to appropriately meet them there. Moreover, with a solid background knowledge of these theories, I am able to draw out new meanings from current practices that will further enhance the understanding of student development.

Evidence 1 is a paper where I reflected on the interview conversation that I had with one student and I applied theories to explain their college development. Evidence 2 is a paper where I applied theories to understand my personal development in college.
