This competency involves understanding the different laws and policies that impact and influence Higher Education and Student Affairs Administrative practices both at the national and local levels. Knowing how compliance with legal tenets, such as FERPA, Title IX, ADA, etc., govern institutional practices and policies is critical to professional practice and success.

Our industry, like every other field, operates within a legal landscape. Although I may not necessarily know all the legal precepts and policies out there, just having an awareness of their existence helps to stay conscious of compliance issues that I may need to keep being knowledgeable about. Also, knowing where and how to locate resources concerning these and developing a relationship with the institutional, legal counsel is vital.

Evidence 1 shows a policy analysis paper that I wrote on current legislative issues of ADA compliance and digital accessibility in selected institutions. Evidence 2 is a journal legal brief that I wrote on the dicey subject of risk management and institutional liability in the case of Laura O. (Anonymous) V. State 610 N.Y.S.2d 826 (N.Y. App. Div. 1994).
