Personal & Ethical Foundations (PEF)

  • Values and Personal Foundations revolves around a practitioner’s self-awareness and knowledge of self - attributes that play key and background roles in how professional responsibilities are carried out.  Values are personal and also emanate from a professional’s commitment to the field. Concepts within this competency includes self-care, professional ethics, resiliency, work-life integration, reflection, etc.

  • This very important competency lies at the core of the others and holds everything else together. The Student Affairs environment is a very volatile and stressful field and a firm VPH enables me to keep going with a clear personal vision. It helps to stay reminded that only by being at my best can I offer my best to others. By having a personal understanding of professional ethics, I am able to practice within appropriate boundaries. Continuous and critical reflection on my field experiences allows me to draw our new meanings and create knowledge for progress.

  • Evidence 1 is a first semester reflection paper that I wrote about the process of my choosing Student Affairs as a profession. Evidence 2 shows a first semester brochure that I designed with a classmate, which showcases the professional and personal foundations that are needed to be a Career Advisor. I started out from my first semester in Graduate School with having a natural inclination toward helping students with their career development and I ended up becoming a Graduate Assistant for ATU’s Career Services. This brochure was one of the first projects that motivated me to work toward it.
